WASHINGTON June 19, 2014 — A Bar + Kitchen, located in Avenue Suites, a Modus hotel, will launch a quarterly ‘Doggie Happy Hour’ on July 12 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., featuring a host of treats for guests and their four-legged friends. The inaugural happy hour will benefit the Beagle Freedom Project (BFP), an organization dedicated to rescuing Beagles from laboratories and testing facilities where they are often mistreated and abused. Special guests at the kickoff include all members of the DC7, a group of beagles who were rescued from a laboratory in the DC region one year ago. The dogs, all named after the Founding Fathers of the United States, have since been adopted and acclimated to society, and live throughout the country. They will have a one-year reunion celebrating their rescue in the nation’s capital.

The first in a series of quarterly doggie happy hours, A Bar + Kitchen will serve a variety of cocktails, including The Hound’s Tooth, made with
Maker's Mark bourbon, chartreuse, sherry, and bitters; Cold Nose, Warm Heart mixed with Green Hat gin, cherries, and blackcurrant, lime and apple juices, and The Red Baron (Snoopy's alter-ego), made with a healthy dose of Tito's vodka, sweet vermouth, soda and fresh strawberries. All cocktails will be $10 with $1 of each drink benefitting the BFP.

Hotel guests and Washingtonians are encouraged to bring their dogs, too, who will have a chance to meet the Beagle guests of honor and enjoy treats such as beef and chicken flavored water and custom-baked, patriotic-themed dog cookies from The Cheeky Puppy, a newly opened modern, lifestyle pet store in Washington, DC. For the month of July, the adjoining Avenue Suites, a pet-friendly hotel, will also donate $5 of their in-room pet fee to the BFP. To help four-legged guests feel right at home, Avenue Suties’ pet program features a variety of amenities for all dogs during their stay, including Modus Hotels pet bowls, pet treats and a list of neighborhood parks. In addition, dog waste bags and toys are available at the front desk. The Cheeky Puppy’s patriotic treats will be available for all dog guests during July, the selection of which will rotate monthly.

A Bar + Kitchen will work with other animal welfare groups for upcoming quarterly happy hours, which will be announced when details are finalized. Visit www.beaglefreedomproject.org/east_coast_rescue_2 to learn more about the DC7 rescue. The seven dogs are named Hammy (Alexander Hamilton), George (George Washington), Ben (Benjamin Franklin), Maddy (James Madison), Tom (Thomas Jefferson), John (John Adams) and Jay (John Jay).
